Concept Plans

UPDATE - June 22, 2023 Concept Plans found to be unworkable at the July 24th work session.
At the July 24th work session meeting, after finding out that the concepts discussed at the June 22nd meeting could not be completed due to issues with locations of existing utilities. A memo from the the Village Manager was distributed to the board members July 19th, included in the July 24th agenda (pg. 2). The majority of the board determined that BME should complete the original plans. 



Proposed and Concept Plans
On December 12th, 2022, Peter Vars from BME Associates presented to the Village Board the following 6 concept plans. These concept proposals were reviewed and discussed with the engineering design team and Village officials prior to choosing Concept 1 as the proposed plan for an active transportation plan for the Village Board to consider. The final concept 1 plan includes updates to address concerns shared at the November 16th workshop. The drawings beyond concept 1 were all part of the original design process. Considering all the possibilities for the street design. Concept 1 was chosen as the proposed plan because moved the utilities that would be in the way and could not be moved in the other plans.


Concept 1 (Proposed Plan)

Features - Bike Lane on North:
11.5' lanes, 8' wide bike lane, 5' wide median, No on-street parking

Aligns with Lift Bridge West
Provides optional outdoor dining spaces
New landscaping/lighting
Protected bike lane
CONS
Loss of on-street parking (NET LOSS 7)
from Parker to Main St


Concept 2

Features - Bike Lanes on South:
11.5' lanes, 8' wide bike lane, 5' wide median, No on street parking
PROS
Fewer driveway conflicts
Longer median lengths
New landscaping/lighting
Protected bike lane
CONS
Does not align with LB West
No outdoor dining potential
Loss of on-street parking (NET LOSS 7)
from Parker to Main St


Concept 3

Features - On-street parking on North:
11' lanes, 8' parking, 3' shoulders, No median/protected bike lane
PROS
Provides + 23 on-street
parking spaces from Parker to Main

CONS
No protected bike lane - Striped shoulder/Sharrow
No landscaping/lighting 
No outdoor dining potential
Not an active transportation design;
primary use remains as a Village street for autos


Concept 4

Features - On-street parking on South:
11' lanes, 8' parking, 3' shoulders,
No median/protected bike lane
PROS
Provides + 23 on-street
parking spaces from Parker St. to Main St.

CONS
No protected bike lane - Striped shoulder/Sharrow
No landscaping/lighting 
No outdoor dining potential
Not an active transportation design;
primary use remains as a Village street for autos


Concept 5
Features - Median in Center (boulevard):

11' lanes, 5' wide median, 4.5' shoulders, No on-street parking

PROS
Bike flow with traffic (each side)
New landscaping & lighting
Provides traffic calming 

CONS
Minimal median lengths 
No protective bike lane 
One way traffic flow subject to traffic blockage for deliveries
